BESS ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTIONS FOR THE HOSPITALS

In the modern healthcare system, where every moment is related to human health and life, the requirement for continuous, stable and uninterrupted power supply is a vital factor. Hospitals, medical centers and healthcare facilities need an energy solution that is not only backup, but also timely and absolutely safe. That is why the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is considered an ideal, even mandatory, solution for the healthcare industry.

1/ Why do hospitals need BESS?

Hospitals are environments with many sensitive devices, from ventilators, anesthesia machines, surgical equipment to testing and emergency systems. All of them are completely dependent on electricity. A single second of power outage can cause serious consequences, even life-threatening for patients. Therefore, the power supply must be maintained continuously, without interruption, regardless of any incident.

Many hospitals now use diesel generators for backup power. However, these generators have a delay in starting up from a few seconds to a few minutes; are noisy and emit exhaust fumes; require high maintenance, fuel, and operating costs.

Meanwhile, incidents from the national power grid such as sudden power outages, local overloads, natural disasters, etc. are increasing, causing hospitals to face more operational risks than ever.

2/ Applications of BESS in hospitals:

2.1/ ​​Provide instant backup power to critical areas:

One of the most important applications of BESS systems in hospitals is to ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical areas such as operating rooms, ICUs, NICUs and emergency rooms. These are places where power interruptions are not allowed, because even a few seconds of power loss can cause serious consequences, even affecting the lives of patients. Unlike diesel generators that need time to start up, BESS can respond almost immediately to power outages, ensuring stable voltage for sensitive medical equipment without interrupting the treatment process.

2.2/ Protect medical equipment from voltage fluctuations:

Many hospital equipment such as MRI, CT, digital X-ray machines or automated testing systems are sensitive to voltage fluctuations or electrical noise. Voltage drops, shocks or unstable currents can damage equipment or cause incorrect diagnostic results. BESS helps stabilize output voltage, filter noise and maintain clean, safe current, contributing to extending equipment life and ensuring operational accuracy.

2.3/ Smart and proactive energy management:

When integrated with an energy management system (EMS), BESS allows hospitals to monitor, coordinate and optimize electricity consumption in real time. The system can automatically schedule charging and discharging according to off-peak and peak hours, helping to reduce operating costs and proactively respond to fluctuations in demand. This is a long-term solution, helping hospitals manage energy more flexibly, sustainably and effectively.

3/ Conclusion:

In the context of increasingly digital healthcare systems and increasingly stringent energy safety requirements, BESS is not only a backup solution, but also a vital layer of protection. Investing in an energy storage system not only helps hospitals improve safety, but also supports the transition to an economical – efficient – environmentally friendly operating model.

Modern hospitals need to implement BESS systems as an integral part of their sustainable operations strategy, to ensure that all medical activities are maintained continuously.
